Lincoln

Lincoln, a poor country lawyer,

called Father of the GOP,

was himself dirt poor:

a terrible anachronism, a twist in time,

and the clearest sign

of the moral sickness of America.

We, who made America great, arrived

as the world’s most poor, were welcomed,

especially families with children.

Now Republicans see immigrants as evil,

even children, because they’re poor

and desperately in need of help.

Their need is answered

by taking children from their parents, locking both groups up,

or returning them to danger just escaped.

America’s once beautiful face now shows no pity,

no understanding,

nor the welcome we as newcomers received.

Hate is the face now immigrants perceive,

most especially greed

is what’s seen in the face of America.

No longer does that City shine bright on a hill,

but’s become a shill

for those who care only about money.

Not just at Christmas, but all year long,

it’s Scrooge who stands at the door

turning away the poor,

while Republicans (intentionally misremembering Lincoln)

review their bills

and continue to add to their billions…
