Sleep

My dog is in deep sleep.
I can hear her breathe.
I must concede
it’s a deeply comforting sound.

Too often the last few weeks
I have not slept well
and on more than one occasion
found it hard to breathe;

often make such sounds

that provide no comfort at all.
Some of my sounds wake her up.
It is my fault,

but never does she make a peep.

She sits up to watch.
Her quietness is a comfort.
She seems to know,

as do I, that I am in trouble
and she heeds the call
my obvious efforts have made.
She does not complain

but sits and patiently keeps watch
until, I assume,
she sees I again am sleeping,
Then, she too can sleep.
