Gods

There have always been many gods
having different names
and different forms of worship
as there are now.

What should we make of this fact?
That gods exist
at least in the minds of humans?
That human brains

incorporate inherited faith
or at least respect
one aspect of human experience
though some reject

this notion as foolish, unproven
a kind of crimp
in the human genome
carried over when man became

first human, or at least prehuman,
as the brain ballooned
to fill up the now larger skull;

a cushioning to protect humanity
from constant fear:
a comforting expectation

of some kind of life after death,
unproved speculation:
we may trust, but we cannot know.
