Disappointment, Judgment & Guilt

Disappointment is a fact of life,
but it needn’t be.
Sometimes disappointment is wrong.
We upset ourselves,
then find later that in fact we were right.

Judgment is a slippery thing
when imposed on others,
more slippery when imposed on ourselves.
Guilt is one honest crime of religion:
we convict ourselves

if not in the real world, then in private.

But guilt itself
has never in the span of its existence
shown a hint of hate
or even self-restriction

that leads from a stint of self-abuse
to confessed conviction.
But it’s all same.

Nothing is left there to quibble.
It’s a lose-lose game.
