Ups and Downs

No matter how long it takes,
life is still worth it,
the ups and downs part of it;
the hates, the wrongs
are certainly to be expected.

They need not be yours.

What there is of wisdom
is likewise sometimes accidental
as are songs and boasts
for which there seems no reason.

Just look at poems.
Why would anyone bother to write them?

Words with no home
like butterflies flitter about.
What is their use?
And who, if anyone, needs them?
C’mon! C’mon!
What America wants is money:
its unique purpose.

So, what if a few twenties flew about
and a five or two
available for the grabbing?
There are surely many who could use them.
But as to poems?
To what can you apply them?

They’re a waste of time.

Besides, who on earth can use them?
It’s food and clothing that we need,
not a few cute tunes,
unless, perhaps, as advertisements…
but ads are addressed to the foolish.

What ads sell is junk.
Even poems are more compelling.
Come to that, poems are not out selling themselves.
That’s in their favor.

So let them be
like flowers or candy or gifts.
That’s a whole new twist
like the unexpected surprise
of a sudden kiss.
