Perhaps

Wind, blowing far
and cold,
perhaps over snow
the single shadow
of, perhaps, a star,
dusts a single spruce,
also cruelly, perhaps,
with delicate ice:
fog frozen to, perhaps, a shadow.

Did that shadow, perhaps,
prophesy,
                  even to friends,
of him who descends
perhaps in a shadow?
Or, perhaps the tree
tallest of three
with its center
                         perhaps a shadow.

The height of the shadow
and perhaps its depth
with the star recedes
as perhaps wind passes,
leaving alone,
                        perhaps in snow,
the tree
              or perhaps a shadow.
