Emotion

1.

Sometimes there is no beginning,
sometimes no end.
Caught always somewhere in the middle,
I twist and bend
now this way, now that
like a tree,
still remain individually anchored
until the wind
blows hard enough to uproot me.
I do not contend all beginnings and endings
have purpose.

2.

If I had a brother,
I would want that brother to live,
to grow strong and climb
the tallest available tree
and, if falling, find
the climb to the top was worth it.

3.

First morning comes, then evening;
or life reverses,
so that darkness becomes the beginning
and light the end
to whatever
the moment's adventure.
Sometimes a change in perception
requires plans.

4.

Worry, hope and regret huddle together,
three pigs in a house
built of straw.
It is not just weather;
there's a wolf huffing outside the door.
Dare we let him in?
Are we pigs, then, that choose to be eaten?
In the end we settle for bricks,
build our own dank prisons.
