A heavenly apparition,
an unearthly sound,
a wild self-echoing
challenge.

A ragged alliteration
that falls to ground,
then rises from cornfields
to heaven.

This hymn of many voices
is not only heard
where wildness entertains
with its blessing,

but where cornfields and geese interact
like unmatched twins
in an affirmation
of being.

An essential sound,
discreet disembodied expression

that is heard far off
as the distant baying of dogs;

up close:
undefinable yearning.

From above the clouds
sound cascades down
in ragged showers.

Silence collects
in between the puddles
of this falling rain.

Like dogs on scent
or buoys that give warning
by sound,
geese announce
the path that today they are flying.

As with tracking hounds
that give voice
to the spoor
they are tracing,
you have just to listen

to know
if and when they'll arrive
or be swallowed up
in reminiscence.
