Hawk
From on high,
the hawk measures its kingdom,
a grassy realm
of meadows and ditches
and trees;
sharp of eye and equipped with talons,
nonetheless can be
an extension of post or a pylon.
He keeps a silent vigil.
What it is he seeks
is not what we might call wisdom,
but, instead, a squeak
or, better, unsolicited invitation.
All flesh is weak
and the focus of his mind is narrow.
Blood, flesh and marrow
are the content
that his hunger seeks.
His mere presence communicates terror.
He need not speak.
