Upside Down
The part of the tree we see
is called the crown.
For energy, it draws on roots;
The roots dig down.
The root is the spirit most proper.
It proceeds alone.
The leaves are the royal usurper:
they are the crown.
Roots, nevertheless, ignore them,
instead drive down,
intent on pursuit of water.
The leaves of the crown lend expression,
offer color to those with depression.
Fall blows time-out
and everything previously seen
turns upside down:
Bare branches reach up to the sky.
Hidden roots dig down.
