Desert Dependence

Blessed rain and holy snow
are but the makings
that refill dry catchment basins,
restart failed springs,
replenish wells, and bring
a glorious season.

I like to think how spirit
may fill the soul
and then withdraw, diminish.
Soon comes a flood,
raging and unexpected,
no warning given
from the mountains
where such floods start;

turns rivers into gulches,
tears banks apart,
and so recreates the landscape;
brings old trees down
to replace with brand new life:
bright green
and altogether fragile...

Thus does God himself destroy
and then recreate.
