Sacerdotal Significance

If  you are engaged in art, what you touch is sacred,
as is the process
by which art itself is created:
pencil, voice, or brush.

Fragrant smoke is sent up to heaven,
but no voice heard:
sacrifice not worth acclamation!

Commitment is an effort of trust,
thrust up by an inner self
that itself is but a quaking of bones.

The process, nonetheless, is magic:
white rabbit pulled out of a hat,
girl sawed in half,
and a fire, though smokeless, that burns!

In the process, there is never applause,
just that quiet pause
as the ego essentially shuts down
to allow the creation emerging.

Then the head is bowed
as response of the gods is awaited:
Will the sacrifice be accepted?
Is its smoke found good?
