Sarah's Path
The path is dim, the destination suggested
in the way a hymn
may be hummed,
if the words are forgotten.
Or the way a word, clearly spoken,
can be remembered,
but not the one who spoke it.
Pathways, too, are forever remembered.
Feelings remain.
If the home, where it led was happy,
it still leads on.
In this painting, the house is on a hill.
Along the path are flowers.
The blues and greens establish comfort
and the path’s worn down.
The flowers are for those departed,
no longer here.
It is them the artist is calling,
paint brush in hand.
Someday she, too, will be a memory
and will join them there,
walking up the pathway she’s painting
in spring’s clear air.
