Green World (for David)

In the green world
of this meadow
it is hard to see
beyond the immediate
grasses.

Individual leaves
are bent by an ant
or beetle.
These are not
important.

Important are
the rustlings not wind,
the sun
moved into shadow
on a clear day.

I begin by imagining
trouble.
I define myself
by setting forth a list
of my enemies.
