Knowing Love

If you must, think of rivers and oceans.
Rivers divide,
skirt islands, create new channels;
at times will flood,
then shrink to only a trickle.

Some streams run fast to the ocean.
Some hardly flow.
and some dry up so completely.

You would never know,
except that dry beds
are called rivers.

You can't build dams to hold love
or simply increase the flow
by opening flood gates up wide.

However, if you wish to ride,
grab oars and row hard at high tide.
Only rest when the tide is low.
