Abused Child

An abused child is always listening
for praise he knows won't come,

trying ever in all ways to be better,
adding up to a zero sum.

There is nothing he can do about it,
and, yet, he can never give up

wanting his mother to love him,
to understand and appreciate what he's done

and offer one word of thanks
to have had an outstanding son.
