Cookie Jar
The cookie jar lid was broken.
I didn't do it,
but was punished, nevertheless,
and charged with lying.
A child understands injustice,
has a nose for fair.
It's his nature to protest against wrong.
Is this a function of ego, mere twitch of genes,
or inherited self-assertion:
first goal, then means?
Or simply the wish to be seen
and, of course, be heard?
