The Man I Want to Know
About a man (and whether) I want to know him:
the extent to which he lets his life depend
on summer shade
or winter’s icy rain and blowing snow.
I’d check the current of all the nearby streams
and if their flow’s consistent
with his aim
and in keeping with his nature.
Indirectly, it is a question how he shall live
when trees are gone
and polar bears and foxes,
ants and fish:
whether preparing to defend his fort
when stores fall short
or acting in consort with those who seek
and work together to reach both health and peace.
