The Envelope

Whose name is on the envelope?
Is it yours or mine?
And what do you think is inside?
Bank notes? A letter?

Does that make a difference to you?
Or don’t you care?

And should it declare mad love,
will you receive it?
Tear it open? Tear it up? Shoot yourself?

Or, let’s suppose
it guarantees life for ten years?
Would you believe it?

But what if the letter is mine?
How then, my friend, will you respond?
Wish me happiness? Or decide to kill?

And if I don’t defend myself,
what will you do?
Proceed and then cover up?

There is no end of such questions.

Each day we face
more decisions than we ever intend,
all to be traced
to the simple fact we all are part of a trap
called the human race.
