Walls

Like Robert Frost, 
I am no friend of walls.
Walls are surely the opposite 
of freedom.

But now it seems, 
some Americans want to wall us
in addition to the prejudice 
that already walls us in.

What keeps Mexico from walling us out,
China and Russia?
What then becomes of trade?
How pay off debt?

Are there debtors’ prisons for countries?
Chains on arms and legs
as was Scrooge 
in the Christmas Story.

So clank our way
aloud with moans and shudders,
crawl on our knees
from one to another country, 
begging to be let in.
