Night and Day

Night without stars
to itself is dark
and objects minus shadows
to themselves are dark.

The white of stars
links nights to light
as shadows by day
link days to night.

But stars, it is said,
create their light
as if, perhaps,
to enable sight.

The far side of darkness
is too far away
for us to reach,
so what can we say?

That perhaps a star
is the gem in her crown
a queen wears proudly
to fend off the darkness
that is sure to come.
