The Hummer

Its body is motion,
its wings a blur.
The sound it makes
is a quiet whir.

Its tail is flexible:
up, down, around;
but it spine is rigid
and tightly arched.

As to blooms, it’s a pirate.
As to air, it is flight.
It is strictly a day bird.
that sleeps at night

in a nest acorn-size
where it lays its eggs,
but doesn’t sit long
anywhere by day.

As to song, it’s a buzzing
that is not often heard.
The calories needed
are amazingly high.

It works hard just to live.
