Dear Christ,

You're reported to have died for sinners.
I confess I'm one. Nor am I
a true believer.
They're the ones I shun.

It is said you were perfectly human,
yet did not sin.
But isn’t sin part of being human?

I have never been a fan of evil,
but human sins,
such as greed, compulsion of sex,
and the need for killing,
seem to me a part of my nature,
as is said, built in.

Do you think anybody wins?
I can't. I don't.
Human misery, so often self-inflicted,
still daily grows.

You must know it's true
that those who shout loudest of faith
spew the blackest hate.
Indeed, faith is writ on a slate
greased with blood.

I try hard not to be bitter,
even try to love,
but I tell you it has been a struggle.
Was it so for you?

Let me say, I am sorry for your trouble.
It was unfair. Your effort
was predestined to fail.

I accept we are in this together.
I can feel your pain,
but the rain I need is heedless.
It just runs off.

Tell me, why cannot rain fall softly?
Why not? Why not?
