Salt-and-Peppers

“Salt-and-peppers” was what she called them,
those speckled blooms
we looked for first thing in spring;
not a scented bloom,
but in every particular a lady.

These flowers, dug up as a weed,
by me are welcomed
and praised
as the first wildflowers.

I call them
what my grandmother called them
because she loved them.
