Cattle Cars
The cattle cars roll on,
smelling of excrement and piss.
They carry men, women, and children
for no reason except they exist.
They are valued less than to cows
in the pastures passed.
Now the cars are emptied and gone,
but one remains
in Jerusalem where memory is strong.
The rails on which it rests
have been twisted off;
dug below, a symbolic abyss.
The meaning is not to be missed:
to be
does not mean you are wrong;
and silence may be accusation,
as can singing:
It always depends on the song.
