To Become More Human
Scavengers may be the most human
though we can't accept
and don't feel at ease in their presence:
They eat the dead.
No team is named after hyenas
although they mate and prosper
among their kin
at a rate that exceeds that of lions
who would be king.
What is our problem with hyenas?
The laugh? The grin?
The unwavering attraction
to death?
We respect the strong.
We, too, eat the dead others kill.
If this is wrong,
then what, after all, makes us human?
Is this not success?
