Song of War

Sing songs for those soldiers now dead
we sent to war;
the patriotism of families who are no more.

 Sing hymns of assurance we’ll win
since it is God's war;
then look about for signs of losing.

 Be assured that war,
when accompanied always by arrogance,
pestilence, and whores,
creates more poor,
more homeless, more hungry, more weak;

 for some it’s a well-known game
by which those who never were warriors
seek to make a claim…
for something they never did
nor confess mistakes.

 Ah, yes, most wars,
simply put, are a sign of hubris;
for this and more
we should not ask help, but forgiveness.

 Good Lord!  Good Lord!
