Man on the Subway
The man rides the car without question.
He is riding home.
His work for the day is over.
He will not mention
to his wife anything that occurred.
He will get a beer
and immediately turn on the TV.
It's enough to be seated in a chair
in an all paid house
with a yard
that on weekends he mows.
He has kept his vows.
It is enough.
Even so, he thinks back to his time
on the farm
and how much he longed
for the freedom he thought was the city;
to be known, looked up to, respected;
to come back home
with a wife in a car, flashing money.
Not a doubt, not a one ever done.
He thinks to himself it is funny
how things turn out.
