Race

I don’t know what it will take
to convince us Whites
that black Americans have rights.

They, too, wear shoes
and clothes; get married, go to church,
work at jobs, fight wars.

They sneeze when they have a cold,
when sleepy, yawn.
Hispanics also mow their lawns.

And as to hair,
my beautiful American hydrangeas
are wearing Afros.
