Fetality

Soul may recover its aplomb
when again it comes
where the ear no longer
can hear
and the tongue’s made dumb;

to rejoice in unlimited freedom,
that comfort zone
from which
it was violently torn
to awake alone;

a freedom understood
by the few—
only old light-hearteds
who were also
torn free at their birth,

but achieved late solace
away from the din of this world
in the world with Alice
where Jabberwocks make lots of sense
and the crimes are modest.
