Good Relations

From childhood, we’re taught good behavior:
dessert, to use an example,
if we clean our plates:
thus, teach desired behavior as we do dogs.

What is the desired result when the stick comes out?
Does pain trigger love or resentment,
lead to trust or fear?

The trigger to love, it seems, is love itself,
just as kindness engenders kindness.
Then what of nations?

Should we not expect respect to return respect?
Then why not give it?
